Overview

"Rather than depict the world, I work with what remains of it. The impressions, the intervals, the slight shifts in perception that stay when the rest falls away."

Artist Statement

I’m interested in the parts of experience that don’t announce themselves. The way a place lingers after you leave it, or how memory holds onto structure long after detail has faded. My background in architecture taught me that a space is never just a backdrop; it shapes how we move, how we think, and what we feel. Painting, for me, works in the same way.

Rather than depict the world, I work with what remains of it. The impressions, the intervals, the slight shifts in perception that stay when the rest falls away. I think of the paintings as frameworks rather than images: minimal structures where form and colour lean toward meaning but never settle into certainty.

The work isn’t there to complete a thought.

It’s there to open one.

What appears on the surface is just enough to invite recognition, and just open enough to let the viewer build their own world inside it ; the way any empty room can become a memory, or any quiet moment can hold a horizon.

When you close your eyes, the blankness isn’t empty; it fills with possibilities. My paintings move in that same space; the place where the external world dissolves, and what’s left is the part that belongs only to you

Biography

Rooted in an architectural understanding of space and composition, his paintings blur the lines between form and figure, structure and spontaneity—translating the ephemeral rhythms of daily life into a visual lexicon of movement, tension, and stillness.

Angus White (b.1998, Melbourne, Australia) is a London based painter whose work explores the fleeting nature of human experience. Rooted in an architectural understanding of space and composition, his paintings blur the lines between form and figure, structure and spontaneity—translating the ephemeral rhythms of daily life into a visual lexicon of movement, tension, and stillness.

With a background in architecture and public art, Angus has developed a sensitivity to the way spaces shape perception. This awareness permeates his painting practice, where color and gesture construct environments that are both deeply personal and universally resonant. His recent work moves away from representation, instead distilling human presence into marks, traces, and textures, echoes of encounters, places, and sensations.

His evolution as a painter has been met with critical recognition. In 2023, he was awarded the prestigious Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, as well as the ARM Prize for Architectural Excellence in 2019. Most recently Angus was awarded by the Art Gallery of New South Whales, a residency at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, creating a large body of work. Angus is currently pursuing his MA at the Royal College of Art in London.
